Iconic toy, the "Easy-Bake Oven" is about to become part of history. At least in it's traditional form. A federal ban on the manufacture of incandescent light bulbs, the Easy-Bake Oven's longtime source of heat, kicks in next year. According to Hasbro, they plan to switch to a different heating element. More than 20 billion Easy-Bake Ovens, featuring an incandescent bulb, have been sold since 1963. The toy was even been inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2007. I am sure that we all hope that they can come up with another way to do it, because if you are anything like me, you probably had a lot of fun with this toy when you were younger. Come to think of it, that was probably the last time I baked anything without burning it or lighting the kitchen on fire.

The incandescent bulb ban is a horrible idea. I'm trying to stock up on them while I can. I'm hoping that they will still be able to sell them as "heat lamps," but I'm not sure there's an exception for that. What to put in chick brooders without it? Heck -- what to do for LIGHT? Once it gets down below zero, CFLs don't work at all. They won't turn on. No heat, no light, no good! Not to mention the mercury!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing commercials for these and wanting one so bad, but my mom, who's quite a good baker, always just told me that the food it would make wouldn't taste any good and left it at that :( But I'm sure they'll come up with a new way to do it, so more little girls (and boys? do they make a non-pink and purple version of this?) can enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteFuck, I remember baking with that back in the 90s, back when it kinda looked like a microwave. I thought it was the shit making little brownies and cupcakes...they actually tasted pretty good. Screw you federal ban for killing a piece my childhood! bortaS bIr jablu'DI' reH QaQqu' nay'...revenge is a dish best served cold.
ReplyDeleteI totally used my sisters to cook baloney when I was a kid! And Eleni, I think your mother was just telling you any ole thing to get you to shut up about it! Haha! Easy bake, we hardly knew ye....
ReplyDeleteWas I the only little girl that did not get an Easy Bake Oven? I was so looking forward to seeing my baby girls face when she got one for Christmas in the future... They better come up with a similar idea!
